Why isnt Kahului Library open after three years? | News, Sports, Jobs

Maui Friends of the Library raised over $100,000 to donate to our libraries last year.

Some of that went to Wailuku Library, a tiny and ancient landmark building, to provide fans to aerate and cool its interior for the comfort of patrons, but why won’t the state reopen the Kahului Library?

Before it closed in 2019, Kahului Library received a new roof and solar panels. Floors were next on the to-do list, but the pandemic struck.

Is the state just going to walk away from Kahului Library?

Rumors abound, including that a librarian cannot be found for it. Another has it that a new, larger Kahului Library is planned for Ho’okele Street, near the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Three tall apartment blocks have been built across the street from Kahului Library for retirees, who could walk across the street get to the library.

Will the state spend more money building a new library, at a site to which people would require transportation?

Kahului’s shuttered, fenced-off library has a three-year-old old roof and solar panels and sits across the street from hundreds of patrons who are aching to utilize it.

Why isn’t it open?
